US President Donald Trump has temporarily turned the White House into a Tesla dealership of sorts, publicly purchasing one of the maligned EVs while heaping praise onto Elon Musk in a bizarre press stunt. Trump boasted to cameras that he would purchase the US$80,000 Model S while lavishing a by-standing Musk with effusive praise, calling the South African businessman a "great patriot." Trump also addressed a spate of graffiti, damage, and protests aimed at both individual Tesla cars and dealerships, asserting he would label any violence against Tesla as domestic terrorism.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has declared a 30-day nationwide state of siege after security forces freed dozens of prison guards held hostage by inmates. It follows a weekend of suspected gang violence that left at least seven police officers dead and another 10 injured in the country’s capital. The attacks on police in and around Guatemala City came after hundreds of anti-riot police stormed Renovación prison in Escuintla, to free nine guards who had been taken hostage there.

At least 18 people have been killed as two dozen active forest fires tear across central and southern Chile. President Gabriel Boric declared a state of catastrophe in Ñuble and Biobío regions with the blaze so far having burnt through 8,500 hectares and prompted 50,000 people to evacuate. Trump has long been known to covet the medal, believing it should be awarded to him due to his administration's record of ending conflicts across the globe. The Nobel Peace Prize Committee has said that the award and title cannot be transferred. “As the Norwegian Nobel Committee states: ‘Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time.’ A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot,” the Committee said in a social media post. It is unclear whether President Trump accepted the Peace Prize. Early in December, Trump was awarded the newly-created FIFA Peace Prize at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw, with the tournament set to be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
