Aussies divided over map proposing new state, 'Northern Australia'

There have long been rumblings about whether Queensland should split in two, and now one person has taken the initiative to create a mock-up of what the country could look like if North Queensland were to separate.

The proposed map was shared to Reddit with the caption, "How to get north Queensland their own state", and had North Queensland and the Northern Territory merging into one giant block, dubbed 'Northern Australia'.

The proposal was met with a great deal of encouragement, with several commenters saying they'd support the suggestion.

"I'd vote for that. To be honest, there should be a political push for this new map," said one supporter, while a second person said, "As a Queenslander embarrassed by both the latest election result and the Voice to Parliament referendum result, I'm completely okay with this suggestion."

"As a resident of "Northern Australia" I would support. Border at the Mary River," commented another.

Others weren't on board with the proposal, even calling it "blasphemy".

"As a proud North Qlder, I'm fiercely opposed to this, not least because Darwin over Townsville as the capital?! Townsville's larger and infinitely better than Darwin," said another, adding that the NT should have their own statehood.

"As a Territorian, no thank you," said another opposed commenter.

There has long been discussion of splitting Queensland in two, with Katter's Australian Party (KAP) often pushing for North Queensland to form its own state.

Earlier this year, Robbie Katter, the leader of KAP, claimed North Queensland was being left behind by the state government, a sentiment echoed by many residents.
