Pop Group OMG Girlz Gets $71Million Payout Over Copy-Cat Dolls

OMG Girlz sued MGA Entertainment over its LOL Surprise! OMG dolls, accusing the company of copying the brand and look of the US teen pop group.

On Tuesday, a California jury came to the conclusion that the group’s name and likeness had been stolen, and the group won the long-running intellectual property case.

It awarded $17.9m in real damages and $53.6m in punitive damages, saying their "trade dress" and "name, likeness and identity" had been infringed.

The payout will be split among the three members of OMG Girlz - Zonnique Pullins, Bahja Rodriguez and Breaunna Womack - and to Pullins' mother and stepfather, Tameka 'Tiny Harris' and Chris T.I. Harris.

"This is for creatives everywhere," Rodriguez wrote to the band's 232,000 Instagram followers.

"No longer will we be bullied into silence when it comes to others profiting off of our ideas and creativity."

The case began in 2020 when MGA disputed a cease-and-desist notice and seeked a declaratory judgment stating that its “L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G.” products did not violate any IP rights belonging to OMG Girlz.

Later, counter claims were filed, and the first trial began in January 2023, but it was eventually declared a mistrial.

The second trial was won by MGA Entertainment, but OMG Girlz successfully appealed and took it to the court for a third and final showdown which the US group won.

In a joint statement, attorneys on the other side of the case applauded OMG Girlz, Tiny, and T.I.’s determination and “courage to stand up for themselves and fight a billion-dollar corporation’s intimidation” — adding that the jury did the right thing by holding MGA “fully accountable.”

MGA Entertainment still strongly denied the claims.
