Sri Lanka Flood Death Toll Rises To 212 In Aftermath Of Cyclone Ditwah | 10 News

The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides in Sri Lanka has climbed to 212 people, as a state of emergency has been declared in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. The Disaster Management Centre stated that more than 200 are missing, and around 20,000 homes have been destroyed, forcing 108,000 people into state-run temporary shelters. Sri Lanka's president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said that the country has faced 'the most difficult rescue operation in its history'.

Three Days Of Mourning Begins In Hong Kong For Fire Victims | 10 News

There has been an outpouring of emotion and grief in Hong Kong as the city began its three-day mourning period for the victims of the deadly apartment building fire which claimed 146 lives, with 100 others still unaccounted for. Flags at all government buildings and facilities were flown at half-mast, and will be until Monday (local time), with condolence points set up in all 18 districts across Hong Kong. At these points, residents are able to sign condolence books and mourn the victims of the tragedy. Authorities have made 11 arrests in connection to the fire, including two directors and a consultant from a construction firm.

Pope Leo XIV has delivered a speech in Lebanon where he repeated his call for representatives to do their part to help achieve peace in the region. Lebanese folk dancers braved torrential rain on Sunday as they performed during a welcoming ceremony for the first American pope who arrived in Beirut from a four-day visit to Turkey. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said during the head of the Catholic Church’s visit to the presidential palace, "we will not die, we will not depart, we will not despair, and we will not surrender."

Authorities have revealed the man identified as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House in Washington, D.C. as Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who worked with "partner forces" during the United States' war in Afghanistan. The two National Guard soliders shot in the attack, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, are fighting for life in hospital and remain in a critical condition. The 29-year-old Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 through then-President Joe Biden's Operation Allies Welcome, following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Three Construction Bosses Arrested As Hong Kong Fire Death Toll Rises To 83 | 10 News

The death toll from the Hong Kong fire disaster has risen to at least 83, with almost 300 people still missing. Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee said police have arrested three men who are the company executives working for the building maintenance company responsible for the housing estate, as an inspection into renovations using bamboo scaffolding are underway. Firefighters say they have largely contained the blaze, which has been raging for more than 24 hours and ripped through the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in the northern district of Tai Po.

US President Donald Trump has declared the shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. an “act of terror” and a crime against humanity. Two National Guard soldiers were critically wounded in a targeted ambush near the White House after the suspect, a 29-year-old Afghan national, walked up and opened fire on their afternoon patrol. Trump said in an address to the nation on Wednesday, “We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan, under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country, who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.” The president also announced that he has directed the Department of War to mobilise an additional 500 troops to Washington, D.C.

Dawn has revealed the true devastation of a horror blaze at an apartment complex in Hong Kong. Officials have confirmed at least 44 people have been killed but as the buildings still burn, and hundreds remain missing, the fear is that number will rise. Flames engulfed the multiple blocks yesterday evening - with a major operation throughout the night to try and bring the blaze under control. Investigations into how it started have begun and already, three people have been arrested.
