Dyson Heppell is one of Australian football’s most respected modern leaders, known for his elite professionalism, trademark positivity, and deep connection to teammates, fans, and community. Born in Leongatha, Victoria, Heppell emerged as a prodigious talent with the Gippsland Power before being drafted by Essendon with pick No. 8 in the 2010 AFL Draft.

He made an immediate impact, winning the 2011 AFL Rising Star Award and quickly cementing himself as an influential midfielder capable of changing games through composure, skill, and work ethic.

Across his AFL career, Heppell played more than 253 games for Essendon, receiving All-Australian honours (2014) and taking out the club’s Best and Fairest (Crichton Medal). In 2017, he became one of the youngest captains in Essendon’s history, leading the Bombers through a defining era with resilience, authenticity, and unwavering care for the playing group. He relinquished the captaincy in 2023 after six seasons — the longest continuous captaincy in club history — widely praised for his emotional intelligence and ability to unite others.

Away from the field, Heppell is admired for his philanthropic contributions including founding Haych the Label supporting a young man Harrison Pennicott who suffers from a rare autoimmune disease scleroderma. Dyson also is a mental health advocate, community ambassador, and has a commitment to regional youth pathways. His approachable nature, trademark long hair, and infectious optimism have helped make him one of the AFL’s most recognisable figures.

Following his AFL career, Heppell has continued to explore media opportunities, grassroots football projects, and commercial initiatives, while remaining engaged with fans nationwide. Entering the jungle Heppell brings good humour, grit, and authentic country charm — embracing the challenge with the same spirit that defined his playing days.

Dyson’s charity, Very Special Kids, provides holistic palliative care for children and young people in Victoria with life-limiting conditions, as well as offering support for their families and loved ones throughout the difficult time.

“They have played a big role in a number of families that are close to us,” Dyson said, “especially little H-Man. I’ve been involved with their fundraising days and help raise awareness where I can and all of the staff are beautiful people.”
