Food isn’t just what Kanika cooks, it’s who she is. Born in Delhi, India, where life is noisy, chaotic and absolutely delicious, Kanika’s childhood memories are the sounds of mustard seeds popping in hot oil and the scent of garam masala in the air. She still remembers the warmth of her childhood kitchen, the rhythmic chopping of vegetables and the comforting aroma of spices simmering on the stove. It was here that Kanika realised that cooking was not just a necessity, but a profound expression of love and connection.
Now, she is ready to bring that same love and connection to the MasterChef Australia kitchen, often joking that if she rolls up her sleeves, spices will fall out!
Living in Australia for the past nine years and working as an IT analyst, Kanika has remained close to her roots in the kitchen, learning to blend the bold Indian flavours with fresh Australian produce. She focuses on creating wholesome, nourishing meals that are both comforting and exciting. She loves the challenge of honouring her heritage, while adapting recipes respectfully to suit a modern lifestyle and palate.
Kanika’s Dad Rakesh worked as confectionary chef, and he taught her in the kitchen, as did her beloved Nani and her aunts. Kanika’s knowledge of flavours also evolved by watching Indian street vendors and studying heritage-style recipes.
Now a Mum to twin five-year-old girls, daughters Kiara and Amayra are the centre of her and her husband Vipin’s world. Bringing immense joy to their lives, the girls both love to watch Kanika cook, and messy baking adventures are regularly shared. It’s Kanika’s dream that they grow up connected to family food traditions as she did, and with two mini food critics in training, they seem on the right track.
Kanika brings a blend of creativity and structure to all that she does, and the MasterChef Australia kitchen will be no different as she prepares to plate up, with flavour first, always!
